One simple connection
A charity invites a supporter to make or update their Will and refers them to the Network.
Their Charity Free Will Pack lists participating solicitors locally and those offering remote support.
The supporter chooses a solicitor and has their Will written in the usual way.
Return the signed Confidential Declaration Form with your invoice for processing and payment. Charitable gifts are reported to the referring charity.

One of our core values is approachability and for us, the National Free Wills Network opens doors to allow local people who might not have considered using a solicitor to use our services. We have a long tradition of providing legal services to individuals and organisations that are most in need. National Free Wills Network allows us to continue that tradition. We understand the importance of a Will and so want to allow people to access our services to safeguard their family’s future.
We attract a wide range of clients through the National Free Wills Network scheme. The clients usually then stay with us and instruct our firm for other matters, such as conveyancing.
We limit free Will appointments to four per month due to high demand and our capacity. Some clients require more complex Wills, such as including rights of occupation. Some clients instruct us for other matters, such as conveyancing, which incurs additional fees.
Being part of the National Free Wills Network is a great opportunity to expand your reach in the local area. You can offer as many appointments as you wish according to your availability and your capacity. The clients obtain the free Will pack themselves; the invoicing process is also very straightforward.
Clients tend to be more likely to leave a gift in their Will to charity where they’ve used the National Free Wills Network. By allowing people the freedom to seek legal advice when drafting their Wills, they gain important information about inheritance tax, such as the fact that if you give 10% of your residue to charity, this could decrease the inheritance tax from 40% to 36%.
Having a valid, up-to-date Will ensures that your estate is passed on in accordance with your wishes, so you decide who benefits and how much they receive. Poorly written Wills can be unclear, and so it can be difficult to establish the deceased’s intentions. This could mean that the estate does not pass in the way that you want it to.

The benefits of joining the National Free Wills Network are obviously more clients. The ability, if the situation is right, to be able to offer additional services other than just what might otherwise be a simple Will.
Probably about 50% of clients referred through the National Free Wills Network are looking for lasting powers of attorney or notices of severance of a joint tenancy. What we try to do is obviously get as much information as we can from clients about their background and circumstances, and in so doing it gives us the opportunity then to see where, for their own benefit, they might benefit from that additional advice. We try and advise holistically.
What would I say to potential solicitors interested in joining the National Free Wills Network? Get in there as soon as possible. It will really benefit your practice. Solicitors historically have always seen Wills as something of a loss leader. They try and build up a Will bank because that gives potential access to future work, so it’s kind of a no-brainer.
From a charity’s point of view, why wouldn’t they want to be involved? It seems to me to be a perfect way for them to develop a wider outreach to potential clients and potential donors to their charity.
The repercussions of a poorly written will can be a disaster, it’s vital that Wills are drafted properly. I do worry about Wills drafted by Will writer firms. I’ve come across numerous occasions where that has led to issues and problems in getting a grant eventually. We use specialist software to cut out mistakes, and all the Wills that we draft have precedents approved by leading Chancery Counsel. We know that those Wills have been tested thousands upon thousands of times, and we know that the clauses in our Wills work and do what it says on the tin.
